Earlier this week, on Tuesday, members of the “60 Minutes” team gathered for a meeting to discuss the future of Sharyn Alfonsi’s delayed piece on migrants deported by Donald Trump’s administration to a notorious El Salvadorian prison. The segment, which had been slated for broadcast on December 21, was pulled from air at the eleventh hour by the network’s new MAGA friendly editor in chief, Bari Weiss. Weiss apparently insisted the piece include a voice from the Trump administration, such as Stephen Miller, even though the Department of Homeland Security had declined to comment. At the time, Alfonsi accused Weiss in a note to her “60 Minutes” colleagues of blocking the story from airing for political reasons.

Weeks have now passed since the piece was shelved, and there have been no formal updates from CBS News on when it might run. Inside “60 Minutes,” the status remains murky. During the meeting this week, staffers discussed what changes might be necessary to get the piece into a form Weiss would approve for broadcast, people familiar with the matter told Status. But no resolution was reached, they said. While it’s possible the segment could air on January 18, it could just as easily remain in limbo longer.
