Over on the West Side of Manhattan, the offices of “60 Minutes” are expected to be largely empty throughout July. As is customary, staffers at the revered CBS News program schedule their vacations during the summer hiatus, bringing most work to a standstill until they return.
Unfortunately for newly installed Executive Producer Nick Bilton, that means relatively little will get accomplished over the next few weeks, and he will likely be one of the few people in the office. Under normal circumstances, that wouldn’t be much of an issue. But this year, the timing could hardly be worse. The show remains in a state of turmoil after the Bari Weiss-directed firings on “Black Thursday,” exactly one month ago today. Still, those vacations were booked long ago, and it’s not as if Bilton, the former technology journalist tapped by Weiss to oversee the show, could ask staffers to scrap their long-planned trips.
