In December, Axios chief executive Jim VandeHei wrote an open memo to staffers, warning that the media industry has entered a “post-news era” as individual reality is increasingly shaped by the content consumed. VandeHei said that Axios was “hellbent on being part of the solution,” committing to four goals for the outlet in 2026: focusing its journalism on generational shifts reshaping society, helping readers navigate these historic times, aggressively countering misinformation, and expanding Axios Local offerings to new communities.
VandeHei, who co-founded Axios a decade ago, teased that the outlet was planning to expand to seven new cities to “test our ability to create viable businesses in smaller communities,” with the intention of building a “local Super System” that could revitalize the struggling local news industry. And while A.I. has been viewed as a looming job killer among journalists and indeed media more broadly, the company is enlisting A.I. tools to facilitate the process, insisting the technology can be a friend—or at least, an asset.
