Over the last year, Bari Weiss has been on the hunt, working to identify television talent to recruit for CBS News. While she has had some successes here and there—poaching Matt Gutman from ABC News and Ross Douthat from The New York Times, to name the two most notable examples—there have been many more misses along the way.
Outside of the fact that she has repelled some talent by showcasing for the industry how she has mismanaged iconic franchises like the "CBS Evening News" and "60 Minutes," another key issue is that many of the journalists and personalities Weiss has become enamored with are locked into multiyear contracts with rival networks.
As Status has reported, Weiss has still gone after the likes of Bret Baier and Dana Perino from Fox News; Andrew Ross Sorkin from CNBC; Leland Vittert from NewsNation; and others—a practice that has irritated other networks and flummoxed television news agents. But none of that has not stopped the CBS News boss from trying her hand at dipping into the pockets of her rivals.
