In late February, Daniel Dale appeared on CNN to dismantle the more than 20 false or misleading claims that he identified during Donald Trump’s State of the Union address. “There was just a lot of lying tonight,” Dale, the network’s fact-checker, bluntly stated during an appearance with Jake Tapper, as he catalogued a series of falsehoods Trump told about the economy and elections. The following morning, during an appearance with Sara Sidner, Dale was welcomed onto the network “as he always is at this time in our lives,” where he described Trump’s claim that he had secured $18 trillion in new U.S. investments as “total fiction” and dismissed key parts of the president’s economic narrative as “nonsense.”
