On Monday, Donald Trump shocked much of the media industry when he announced that he had accepted an invitation to attend this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, after breaking with long-standing tradition by shunning the annual black-tie celebration of press freedom throughout his first term. In a characteristically bombastic post on Truth Social, Trump said the WHCA had asked him “very nicely” to be the event’s honoree and promised to turn what is typically dubbed “nerd prom” into the “GREATEST, HOTTEST, and MOST SPECTACULAR DINNER, OF ANY KIND, EVER!”
