On a Wednesday earlier this month, Norm Eisen, the lawyer and former U.S. ambassador turned media personality and co-founder of the Democracy Defenders Fund, was waiting in line to go into arguments before the Supreme Court, where he was part of the legal team arguing in the birthright citizenship case. But he wasn’t just passing the time. As he stood there, Eisen was huddling with a group of others increasingly alarmed by Paramount’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, working to draft a letter objecting to it.
"The letter came together pretty quickly," Eisen told Status by phone Monday evening.
Indeed, just 48 hours later, the language for the open letter had been finalized. The coalition behind it—which included the Committee for the First Amendment, Future Film Coalition, the Writers Guild of America, the International Documentary Association, the Freedom of the Press Foundation, and others—quickly began circulating it throughout the creative community.
