Just a few days ago, on Sunday evening, Mehdi Hasan announced via Semafor that he had poached from Rolling Stone politics reporters Asawin Suebsaeng and Andrew Perez. The prominent reporters, Hasan said, will be charged with breaking stories for Zeteo that aren’t “afraid to call out the people in power.” Hasan (rightly) argued that “independent journalism cannot afford to be defined only by the ‘hot take’ factories out there.”
While I'm told that Suebsaeng and Perez are genuinely excited to be joining Hasan’s Substack-housed publication, their journey to Zeteo was not initially driven out of a desire to find another career opportunity.
