At 10 a.m. on Monday, the “CBS Evening News” team gathered for its regular editorial meeting, in which producers and anchors begin to discuss the story selection that will fill that night’s broadcast. But this particular meeting was different. In attendance was CBS News President Tom Cibrowski, whose presence signaled something out of the ordinary.
At the top of the meeting, executive producer Kim Harvey delivered the news: co-host John Dickerson would be leaving the network later this year. Cibrowski followed with kind words about Dickerson, a longtime face of CBS News. Then Dickerson himself addressed the room. According to people familiar with the matter, the atmosphere was heavy with emotion.
Soon after, Dickerson confirmed his departure on Instagram. “Local news: At the end of this year, I will leave CBS, sixteen years after I sat in as ‘Face the Nation’ anchor for the first time,” he wrote. “I am extremely grateful for all that CBS gave me—the work, the audience’s attention and the honor of being a part of the network’s history—and I am grateful for my dear colleagues who’ve made me a better journalist and a better human.”
“I will miss you,” Dickerson added.
