A few weeks ago, as fall began to take hold in early October, Paramount television chief George Cheeks quietly met in New York City with Jon Stewart and his longtime agent, James “Baby Doll” Dixon. At the time, speculation was swirling across the industry over whether, in the aftermath of Stephen Colbert’s show being canceled, the David Ellison–led company would extend Stewart’s deal to host "The Daily Show" once a week and serve as its executive producer. His contract was due to expire in December, and given Stewart’s outspoken criticism of Donald Trump, many wondered if a renewal would fit with Ellison’s vision for the company.
