When Katie Pavlich’s contract at Fox News neared its expiration earlier this year, the network assumed she would simply renew her deal. After all, Fox News is—by far—the most watched channel in cable, and Pavlich had long been a reliable conservative presence on its air. From Fox News’ vantage point, there was little reason to think anything would change. But things didn’t go according to plan.
As negotiations got underway, Pavlich’s agent, CAA’s Mark McGrath, informed Fox News executives that he had a competing offer from NewsNation, the little-watched cable rival owned by Nexstar. NewsNation had dangled something Fox News had not: Pavlich’s own show. Fox News, by contrast, offered only a renewal of her contributor role, leaving open the door that a bigger opportunity could materialize down the road, but declining to commit to something firm.
