In many ways, this week felt like the end of an era. Across television, radio, and digital publishing, the media industry underwent a profound transformation—with legacy institutions fading, powerful corporate owners transforming the media landscape, and journalism confronting an increasingly uncertain future.
At CBS, Stephen Colbert signed off from “The Late Show” after a historic run atop late night television. The David Ellison-controlled company also pulled the plug on CBS News Radio after nearly a century on the air, going dark on some 700 stations coast to coast. On the digital media front, the Vox Media empire was split apart, with a major stake sold to James Murdoch. And at Business Insider, the company’s chief executive was abruptly ousted amid mounting turmoil inside the digital publisher.
Through it all, Status has been there to chronicle the upheaval and pull back the curtain on the forces reshaping the media business. That’s why I’m especially proud to share that on Tuesday evening Status won the inaugural Mirror Award for Best Media Newsletter, one of journalism’s most prestigious honors for media reporting.
Presented by Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, the Mirror Awards recognize excellence in reporting on the media industry itself, honoring the journalists and organizations that hold powerful news institutions accountable and illuminate how the media operates behind the scenes.
To receive the first-ever award in the newsletter category is an incredible honor for our team. It is also a meaningful validation of the mission we set out to pursue when we launched just 18 months ago to deliver deeply sourced, independent reporting on the powerful forces shaping the media landscape.
And none of it would be possible without you.
