On Wednesday morning, NBC News staffers saw a last-minute meeting added to their calendar for 10 a.m. Most immediately knew what the unspecified meeting would be about: layoffs. Staffers across the organization have been dreading cuts for months and had Wednesday circled on their calendar after we reported earlier this week that they were set to be handed down on October 15.
As journalists joined the brief three-minute Zoom meeting, Catherine Kim, executive vice president of editorial, informed the assembled workforce that layoff notices would go out after the call, citing the recent cable asset spinoff from the network and broader financial headwinds facing news organizations. “This will be a difficult day for a lot of us,” Kim acknowledged. Soon after, NBCUniversal News Group boss Cesar Conde addressed his troops. “We have had to make some difficult decisions, including the elimination of positions across NBC News,” he wrote in a memo to staffers. “While these decisions are necessary to remain strong as an industry leader, they are not easy and are never taken lightly.”
