After years of doom-and-gloom forecasts and a string of near-biblical plagues, theater owners have seen multiple rays of optimism in just the last week: Netflix agreeing to a 49-day window for “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.” “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and “Michael” ginning up complementary box-office bounties. Christopher Nolan eliciting whoops from Stephen Colbert’s audience unveiling the trailer for one of the summer’s most-anticipated films, “The Odyssey.”
Of those moments, none shine brighter than Netflix’s concession on “Narnia,” delaying the Greta Gerwig-directed film until 2027 to provide it a wide release. Coupled with the success of Amazon’s “Project Hail Mary” and Apple’s “F1: The Movie,” the move suggests that streaming services once considered barbarians at the gates—indeed, at times even an existential threat—could become potential allies.
