This week was set to be a perfectly choreographed debut of Vanity Fair’s new era, anchored by the magazine’s annual Hollywood issue and the sensational first excerpt from newly hired West Coast editor Olivia Nuzzi’s book, “American Canto,” detailing her secret romantic relationship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
With her history of crossing ethical lines, Nuzzi was always going to be a controversial hire for the Condé Nast-owned Vanity Fair. But on Monday evening, that decision got more complicated when her ex-fiancé, Ryan Lizza, publicly accused her in his Substack publication of again breaching journalistic standards by engaging in another relationship with a politician she had covered: former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, whom she profiled in 2019 for New York Magazine.

Status Scoop | Couric on CBS Changes: Last week, while being celebrated by the International Women’s Media Foundation as a leadership honoree for the 2025 Courage in Journalism awards, Katie Couric was interviewed by The New York Times’ Maureen Dowd, who asked the one-time broadcast news anchor about her former employers Comcast and Paramount, and their capitulation to the Trump administration’s press freedom crackdown. “These are really perilous times,” she warned. Couric recalled her experience at NBC News, which she said included “an unwritten rule that there was a separation of church and state.” Today, however, “This idea that these corporations are putting pressure on their journalists is so repugnant,” Couric continued.
