On Tuesday morning, staffers at The Washington Post received a memo from Executive Editor Matt Murray, alerting his troops to yet another masthead-level loss for the newsroom. Greg Manifold, head of visuals, will leave the newspaper after a decades-long tenure, departing a role he only assumed a year ago, according to the memo obtained by Status. It’s another gut punch for the organization, which has seen a steady drain of talent between layoffs, buyouts, and departures since Will Lewis joined as publisher and chief executive nearly two years ago.
Inside the Jeff Bezos-owned newspaper, “the mood is grim,” one insider told Status. Of course, there is plenty of reason for the workforce to be demoralized. This year, The Post has endured an unprecedented talent exodus and seen longtime staffers accept buyouts. That’s in addition to forced layoffs, which started in January with the business division, and were followed earlier this month by Adam O’Neal’s opinion section purging several staffers and cutting contractors loose.
