On Monday morning, the speculation became official. During ABC News’ daily editorial meeting, network chief Almin Karamehmedovic informed staff that Eva Pilgrim would be leaving the third hour of ABC’s flagship morning show “Good Morning America,”where she has served as co-host, and the network entirely—confirming what we first reported Sunday evening. In a follow-up note to staff, Karamehmedovic praised Pilgrim’s tenure, emphasizing how she had “touched every show in one way or another” throughout her career at ABC News. Not long after, “Inside Edition” announced that Pilgrim would become the program’s new host, stepping in after Deborah Norville’s departure earlier this year.

But the day wasn’t over. Just a few hours later, Karamehmedovic sent out a second note announcing that DeMarco Morgan, Pilgrim’s co-host on “GMA3,” would also be leaving the network, putting an end to rumors that had swirled in recent weeks given his conspicuous absence on the show. (In fact, I had asked ABC News two weeks ago whether he was still at the network after receiving a good tip that he had exited, but the network declined comment.) “He has decided to begin a new journey and will be departing ABC News,” Karamehmedovic told staffers, thanking Morgan for his “kindness and many contributions.”

The news, while not entirely unexpected given our reporting that Pilgrim was set to exit and that serious questions were circulating about Morgan’s future, still reverberated through the newsroom…
