In her first month as editor in chief of CBS News, Bari Weiss has been actively scouting for talent to help redefine the network’s identity. Weiss has personally reached out, by phone and text, to a number of high-profile journalists across major outlets, including Fox News and CNN, sounding them out about potential roles at the Tiffany Network and gauging their interest in joining the newsroom she is building.
Chief among early priorities for Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski has been identifying and recruiting a new anchor for the “CBS Evening News,” currently co-anchored by Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson. With Dickerson set to depart by year’s end, the decision over who will helm the network’s flagship newscast looms large.
Internally, as Status previously reported, Norah O’Donnell and “CBS Mornings” co-host Tony Dokoupil are both being eyed for the role, though Weiss has also been looking outside the building. She has floated marquee names such as Bret Baier and Anderson Cooper—but her search hasn’t stopped there. Weiss has been casting a wide net, reaching out to figures both inside and outside the traditional anchor mold as she looks to put her stamp on things.
